Hey there all you Diamond Dazzle denizens! 2018 is finally here, and it’s looking to be a great year to really plan out some home maintenance.
But first, I’d like to share a story with you about how your home is just like your clothes dryer.
Confused? Well bear with me, folks. I promise it will all make sense.
Many years ago, when I was living in my first apartment, I was young, independent, and ready for freedom. (So, in other words completely clueless).
For the first time, I found myself having to micromanage every aspect of my life. I had to keep track of grocery money, restocking the fridge, vacuuming, even – gasp – doing my own laundry.
Oh, the absolute horror ladies and gentlemen!
Yes, I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I rarely did my laundry growing up. It was something I unfortunately took for granted – clothes were somehow magically washed, dried, and folded up on my bed every week.
I doubt anyone would be surprised to find this came back to haunt me when I suddenly found myself learning that there was no magical creature washing my clothes for me every week. It had just been my mom being nice.
It was Santa Clause all over again.
So, here I was: 18 years old, confident I knew everything, and suddenly staring down this giant monster in the corner of the apartment.
The Infamous Clothes Dryer
Washing was simple enough. You throw clothes in, add a bit of soap, turn the machine on, badda-bing, badda-boom, and you’re done. The clothes dryer, on the other hand, was another story.
No, it wasn’t difficult for me to figure out how to turn it on necessarily. In theory, it was the same as the washing machine, after all. The problem was that it always seemed to take more and more cycles to fully dry my clothes as time went on.
During my first few weeks of apartment life, things seemed fine. One wash cycle. One dryer cycle. Done. As time went on this increased to two dryer cycles…then three……eventually four.
When it got up to five cycles I started to admit there might be a problem. So, who do
es a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed teenager call in these moments of confusion? His mom of course!
And I kid you not…we stayed on the phone talking for probably 45 minutes while I scanned every inch of this drying machine for the problem.
“Did you check the connector? Are you using fabric softener? What setting do you have the machine on? How long does it take to wash? Are any wires loose?”
The list of potential causes went on and on, but nothing seemed to point to the problem. We were stuck with no clue what was going on.
Enter my roommate.
I’m sure the sight must’ve been hilarious from an outside perspective. A young teenager examining a clothes dryer with the scrutiny of a detective trying to find clues for a murder case. I think it was about the time I threw up my arms, gave the machine a solid kick, and plopped down on the couch in defeat that he finally stepped in to help.
Now I want you all to know something right here and now: my roommate was no electrician. He was no expert on machinery, nor was he especially familiar with this brand of clothes dryer.
You need to know this to understand my shock when he solved the problem in five minutes.
Five. Whole. Minutes.
I was absolutely shocked to my core and demanded he explains his witchcraft on the spot.
Apparently, no one had informed me that clothes dryers tend to collect lint and debris in a pseudo-filter. I had let so much build up (we’re talking over the course of two months) that the machine could barely bring in enough air to dry the clothes.
The look on my face must have been priceless when my roommate at the time took out enough lint to knit stockings for every child in Alaska.
I learned an important lesson that day, and my roommate gained a story he never missed an opportunity to share at parties.
What Does This Have To Do With Home Care?
When drying my clothes, I was neglecting a simple – but crucial – step towards keeping the machine at peak performance. My problem wasn’t a big problem at first, but over time it grew worse and worse. The exact same thing could happen to you if you neglect proper maintenance of your home.
It’s so easy to let the small things fall through the cracks, whether through procrastination, negligence, or even being ill-informed on regular upkeep. Maintaining a sturdy and clean home exterior is hard and continuous work. You need to make sure you’re on top of ALL aspects of it or else problems will start rising slowly but steadily.
You don’t have to be ignorant like me, though! Don’t wait until a problem arises to take basic care of your home! Pressure wash those side panels. Clean out those gutters. Wipe down those windows. Find that “collection of lint” in your home that’s causing problems under the radar!
Once you find it, give us a call at Diamond Dazzle, and we’ll make sure it’s taken care of, keeping your house is in perfect shape. (And don’t worry – we won’t share your story at parties like my roommate did).
